Sarough Persian rugs are hand-woven in Sarough, a large village near Arak. It is an important and historic rug-weaving center. Sarough rug patterns feature floral vines. The main colors are red and navy. Arak, formerly known as Sultanabad, is an important rug-producing city in the province of Markaz. The hand-woven Persian rugs made in the towns of Ferahan, Lylyan, Mahallat, Jozan, Malayer, Meshkabad, Mirabad, Sarough, Seraband and many small Kurdish villages are marketed in the city. In 1883 the first rug exporter set up shop in Arak and by the early 20th century, the city had become a key center of the rug exporting business. The Persian rugs marketed in Arak display strong Kurdish influences and traces of a Turkish ancestry. Mahal rugs are of a very high quality and woven in Mahallat.
